In Memoriam Sara Halperyn

1920 • February 13 th 2002

Sara Halperyn, Librarian of the Center of Contemporary Jewish Archives, found the documents which permitted me to dedicate as a whole all my past works as well as all my present and future works, to all the new-borns born at Rotschild Hospital in Paris in 1942 and 1943, and who were deported together with their mother to Birkenau where they were murdered without even as much as a legal registered identity. Sarah Halperyn has made it possible for us to testify that these children have existed. Hence her name cannot be separated from this dedication.

Foreword

«I have but twenty acres of land, » replied the Turc, « I plow them with my children : work chases three great evils away from us : boredom, vice and misery.»

Candide (Voltaire)

In May 2002, I had written as a foreword to my book (Freud, l'hystérie, la yA et l'histoire) a brief report on the events preceeding the French elections as well as the period between the second turn of the elections and the elections of the president, followed by the vote for the legislative chamber. That foreword was also published on our website. It constituted an urgent call to psychoanalysts, be they isolated or members of a professional union, to say « no » to the dramatic shameful Massenideologies of that beginning of the XXIst century. Eventhough the root « cracy » resounds pleasantly to one’s ears, democracy and the Republic of thought were in danger of loosing all meaning, signifying nothing. We were several men and women claiming and protesting against the nonsense of a « protest-vote », that would lead to the success of a régime of vulgarity, brutality and of the prohibition of thought. That « potest vote » made no sense, and could even lead in the long run to a fur thepromotion of events as triteness, a process that has been going on for the last sixty years.

Many of us, belonging to the generations born before, during and after the war, knew eversince 1981 full buildings of people who would shamelessly declare that they voted Le Pen. they would even do so quite openly, without any twist of the tongue, even when unasked for anything, if not for the mere decency of keeping silent.

Let me mention a typical story. Some months ago, one of these individuals even wanted me to give him my yellow star, or at least one of another internee, « but a real one, please », not the copy of a star, to alleviate his nostalgia for the great meetings of Nürenberg and crystal nights. I have to mention this story, since I refer to it later concerning psychoanalysis.

Freud had called the Third Hitlerei, i.e. Hitlery.

We were a few voters to have expected and waited for an official position of analysts in April 2002, in view of what threatened to overturn independence, and freedom of thought. y Le temps du non (psychoanalysis ; time for « no ») broadcast this call by mail and e-mail on April 1st. On May 1st, only the SPP, the Society of Parisian Psychoanalysts, had taken a firm and public stance.

One would think that psychoanalysts, be they isolated or members of unions, had been afraid of losing their patients, which is obviously the risk they would run under such circumstances.

« Hell, no, France is not antisemitic, nor are the French people »… « This is not like Berlin in the 20’s… not even like Paris in the 30’s… ». The fact that people would harp on that string – together with some of their slogans, of their incantations – only means that the process of a ritual aiming at denying reality is at work, while we can perfectly read, and even better than read, see, while we are supposed to be able to hear.

Let us bear in mind that France did not particularly stand off with glory to help Freud out of Vienna in 1938, or welcome him and his family, not to say to name him president of a French psychoanalytical society which had turned very Catholic, i.e., universal, if I understand this term most correctly. Apart from the international connections of Marie Bonaparte, those of the American ambassador and rather failed writer William C. Bullit, without the guaranty of Freud’s family’s settlement in England, Freud would have been left with America, where he still had a few truthful and powerful fortunate patients.

However, we are still waiting for those susceptible voters - among whom, how much effort to rationalise has been spent, a high rate of abstention always promotes the success of the extreme right wing - to demonstrate, first of all, that times have changed indeed, and this on the basis of arguments and commentaries a little more sustained than those commonly used, be it from the perspective of history, history of ideas, of sciences and techniques, of ideologies, i.e. from the perspective of structures drawn after those of religions, since this is the viewpoint, focused on the (Res)publica that mainly draws our attention in the present case. The reader may still find today the text of the Forum opened on the website y Le temps du non on April 1st, 2002. He will find and observe there the development of things, the timorous freeze of the « French analytical community », a behaviour which, if one reads Freud correctly, contradicts the very aim of psychoanalysis ; then the progressive distance taken by the rare last Lacanians with whom we still had an overstretched correspondence, until the position taken by the Société Psychanalytique de Paris, on the eve of the presidential election « againsttotalitarism » and conveyed to us by a reader, and which we have judged important enough to have it as widely spread as the number of our readers and thanks to modern technology.

Perversion, which comprises denial that leads in its turn to negationism, and antisemitism share the same structure. Perversion, negationism and antisemitism, with their scope of indiscrete behaviours, all intrude in other people’s lives to expose them to the public eye and feed on them without ever eating their fill.

In the field of analysis, for instance, Freud’s biographers and other analysis professors, supported by the lack of culture of the media, have been more busy to elaborate explanations and interpretations that could be typically qualified as baseless : they dealt with Freud, as an individual – with his daughter Anna also – on the basis of rumours of antechambers and chamber-pots, rather than with giving a close attention to what Freud said, or wrote, in order to confront his theory with reflexion and practise, in one word, to try to go somewhat further on that line, and not see all creation misconsidered and finally wane, rust, and get waste.

Only two persons knew something of the individual man Freud in his private life : his mother Amalia, and his wife Martha. Neither of them, not even his daughter Anna, because of the Incest taboo, has ever evoked, and noone will never know what Freud has not said. It is none of our business.

History has different aspects indeed, whether you live it or you read it.

Ernst Federn

To quote a few examples among all those that thrive since the beginning of Psychoanalysis, I wish to mention the following story, since it belongs unfortunately to its history while belonging simultaneously to the history of the hostility it illustrates. Every analyst, every patient may testify of this phenomenon, with its variations of speech and means used.

I live and work in a building where lives a creature, who truly believes to be the reincarnation of Hitler and of everything that goes with it without any exception, as I will give the reader a short overview. As if by the miracle of the signifier, the first letter of the name of the Führer and the first letter of that Peeping Tom’s name are different, but can be read exactly the same if written with the German gothic handwriting alphabet. He is the individual I evoked before in my Foreword and who wanted me to give him a yellow star – a real one – and who shamelessly boasts about his political vote since 1981.

He is always on the prowl, he alternatively appears, peeps, brawls, ejaculates, gesticulates, so that one could think him to be a clown. In the meantime, he commits unlawful deeds and if possible, has them committed by his folks or by someone of his surroundings. All of them, just like himself, have not hesitated to follow me wherever I would go, to trail my patients, be they male or female, during the week or on holiday, even on the precise place of our summary-meeting, in the town-workshops belonging to the City-Hall. Apart from checking mail-boxes, he also rumbles trash in the dustbins. Everybody knows about it in the district, and even more.

After I had lodged a complaint against him in August 1999, he persisted until the end of November 2002, spying the people coming in and out of the building thanks to a camera which he has installed in the porter’s lodging ; he would burst in, stay in people’s way, and suddenly disappear before the police would arrive. That creature does not belong to theatre, his name is not Arturo Ui, an eponymous plays written by Brecht in 1941, imported and interpreted by Jean Vilar 19 years later, in 1960. He is not a fake ; that individual is a real human being, that kind exists, that kind speaks, acts, even votes.

Since I had vainly tried, for more than a year, to mention the issue to the building’ committee, and to my landlord, whose « cousin in law », the above-mentioned individual, became the helping hand, while his sister would actively give a helping hand, I thus had[1], to make another claim in August 1999 on the basis of the violation of my free exercise of my trade, as well as for the violation of the professional secret and intrusion in that professional secret analysts are obliged to keep, intrusion into the secret of professional and personal correspondence, as well as for violation of privacy in my personal and professional place of residence, abuses (in front of witnesses), racist abuses, and use of all means that could ruin my reputation and prevent the development of my professional activity and the analysis of the patients coming to my clinic.

The whole thing has taken place with the support and mandate of all his kins, together with my landlord who finally found herself in the middle of that circle, and who finally decided to evict me, since I refused to withdraw my complaint despite very explicit threats.

As to my apartment, all the inhabitants of the neighbourhood have their eye on it quite shamelessly, i.e. quite unrespectfully. Today I receive, as I have often received, another obscene virus sent by that web-master. Let me change subject without any further detail. In the first procedure, the lawyer I had taken for my defence, who does not like psychoanalysis, yet does not despise money, did not take precisely my request into account, so that the whole thing was in vain, and the judge concluded after scamping her work on my file that there was no ground for prosecution. Yet this was not a trial for money, nor for bad temperament’s sake, but for ethics, for a violation, e.g., the violation of the article 12 of the Declaration of Rights of Mankind and of Citizens of both Sexes, which summarises in a few words a great part of the obscene behaviour of that individual and of his kind. This first procedure did cost me a lot of money for absolutely no result. To top it all, we had the benefit to hear on the part of professionals of the bar such nonsense that was close to abuse, which proves that stupidity can turn into a threat when your opponent is powerful. I then decided to take my heavy file away from my female lawyer to hand it to a male lawyer, whom I chose so that he would hear me, and take care of what belonged to justice, in order to ease me from that weight in my daily life – which I did keep under control, that weight being 1 to 2 hours a day since 4 years and a half. I trusted him after he declared « That’s my job, not yours».

Today, at the end of December 2002, I have sent him an e-mail : « Thanks, I would not have done it without you. » One will easily understand that I will reveal his name only when I consider it useful and with his agreement. He is the one who helped me to understand what I knew, what I said, but what I did not integrate in my personal plan, i.e. that human baseness has all the rights. I understood at a glance why the « stars » and the VIP were surrounded with bodyguards.

Anti-semitism was not mentioned at first, in the very beginning. But once the term was mumbled by a Lacanian analyst who thus spoke and murmured in the name of many, as I learnt soon after, I recalled the book Shoah, in which Lanzmann quotes that passage from Hilberg, which I have often suggested to anyone who was ready to hear it since 1985 :

…Christian missionaries had said to Jews :

« You cannot live among us as Jews»

Secular governors who followed since the Middle Ages decided in their turn :

« You cannot live among us »

 then the Nazis declared[2] :

«You cannot live. »

It is quite simple. At each stage, part of the sentence is dropped, until one day a new concept is established on the basis of a very common word, that of the Vernichtung, the total annihilation of the Jews. Thus, no need to proceed with a semantic annihilation, a mere word is.

What was to be called Vernichtung was not meant to exempt anybody. I found a letter from Freud to Putnam, written on July, 8th 1915, in which, commenting on the willful misuse of the word « ethics », he writes the following :

…All the religious conversions I saw which were made in the name of ethics did not make me feel particularly hopeful. As for Jung, for instance,[3] whom I used to find quite nice as long as he was groping his way forward, as I did myself. then he was seized by this ethico-religious crisis of moral exhilaration, his « rebirth », […] together with lies, brutality, and antisemitic despise towards me. It was not my first experience of that kind, but it constitutes the most recent of my experiences…

In the present case, the police have done their job and continue to do so, even accompanying a patient back to my door-step[4], … or coming to fetch another to lead her back outside. the policemen come each time in groups of 3 to 7.

That was not the case with the justice institution. For three years and a half, I had to confront their immobility, together with the function they would endowe me with ; further more, I had to prove the « good health » of my declarations - the fact that I have been living in that place for 26 years – together with that of my patients, my close relations, and that of my visitors, among whom one finds several doctors and even psychiatrists.

Finally, I expressed my loathing to my lawyer to break my feeling of isolation, in an e-mail correspondence that runs from November 19th to November 30th, 2002, of which the following passages are taken

…What remains incomprehensible is that I should be able to understand that individual’s behaviour, and even cry over his fate, under the false pretence that I am an analyst ! That individual is not a poor lad, I intend to keep on calling him a criminal, a pervert and a monomaniac, in other words I imply that he knows perfectly well what he is doing, and only a part of his mind is affected… in short he corresponds to the classical definition of cleaving which can be observed in the case of active perverts. I stand as a witness, as we do, persuaded that his misdeeds would not have resisted a moderately deep examination. That individual is, among other things, a voyeur, and nobody will contradict me on that point, since eveybody has seen him on the prowl, even on the doorstep of schools. That individual is not a poor fellow, he is a bastard, or in what language should I say it ?  [.]

I restrained myself from elaborating any form of diagnosis until recently. Each thing in its own place, and perversion does not have a place in psychoanalysis, at least under the form I know. Yet is fact that the law considers my word against his is frankly disgusting. And set in balance with that of molested, harassed, abused, persons, one finds all the misdeeds of that individual, supported by his kins, be it material threats to have me expulsed, his actual openings of my mailbox as it was witnessed by several persons, his breaking into the apartment of one of the tenants as he was suspected to have done by the daughter of the tenant concerned, and all the other things mentioned in the file of my complaint. Are procedures made so that the persons who are reckoned to be publicly known for their morality – among whom my personal doctor[5]- to be hindered in their life as much as in their work, and to be suspected of telling imaginary tales ? At least, this case has permitted me to know the ways of justice from inside, but still I find it a little expensive a price to pay.  […] Concerning the pictures we take : the police knows about it, they are meant to defend us against the intrusions of that individual, who was diagnosed by several doctors as potentially dangerous. Moreover, I have taken picture of all of them, his family, his kins, his accomplices, etc, and noone has lodged a complaint against me, despite their sometimes violent threats. […] The actions of that individual have naturally gone worse since he took voluntarily an early retirement, to give himself the title of « janitor », which he is absolutely not allowed to, in order to facilitate the fullfillment of his perverse needs […] I know that the plaintiffs and perhaps even more the female plaintiffs are unjustly suspected of being "paranoiac"[6]. This is typical in the world of publishers where you commonly find cases of unknown - and thus low benefit raising - authors who have to lodge complaints for plagiarism of manuscripts they have handed to publishers who have first refused them before publishing them with a few changes, with an overall brushing over, a re-styling, and the name of one of the readers who happens to be also a writer, one of the favourites of that publishing house. Still I find most surprising that the so-called professionals of Justice are used to speaking a kind of jargon that does not even belong to their field of specialisation, without having even asked for a serious preliminary inquiry. What a strange process to find all the psychological failures on the plaintiff's side and to give weight only and systematically to the delinquent's "word" (!) ... As for me, noone has ever come to ask me or to pay me to "understand", and hence "excuse" the bastard attitude that threatens all of us presently, on the opposite, I pay dearly to have it denounced and condemned, while getting a rather disappointing result until now.

If you think that I have to be in the courtroom on Thursday, I will come, as I refuse to have this individual qualified of "persecuted individual" as he was called during the first procedure, since he does not suffer any persecution complex, I should have known, as some other psychiatrist who often pay me a visit would have known. the fact that he pretends to be persecuted or claims to be so belongs to an entirely different phenomenon. Yet you know that I would rather not listen to that type of discussions since I have lost so much time for such a long time for absolutely no result - and my time is not money, it is gold ! As for now I do wish you a good trial, that is all I can do with all my heart and solidarity...

M. W.

Not one of them, not one or any of those who had identified with that individual, among his surroundings, his neighbours, and those who were preying on my apartment has come to apologise for having been an accomplice, even for having listened to his loghorrea of obscene words, his xenophobic and of course, sexual abuses ; for having thus assisted him. And you still find very fine people in that group of individuals. This is the point we reached, still the case has been taken into account, and we are left with the daily coping with various impedimenta. As for me, I may finally build the project of starting to write the first chapter of my book, within hopefully a short delay and in a relative silence.

Thus I did turn to justice. Yet in order to have a small chance of eventually having a legal decision in my favour, I should have had elements like a "nervous breakdown" caused by these harassments of all kinds and of all forms. As if I could afford having a nervous breakdown! It would mean taking another job. Moreover the legal institution has considered that this individual was a serious pathological case, which does not concern us as citizens. At least my action had the merit of having clearly exposed human baseness to the public, and in a public audience, and this at all levels, be it towards the highest position of the administration, and whatever the price for it would be, since I had to borrow money from my bank to achieve that goal, and I was allowed to borrow it at a very low interest rate. I did what I always do with y • Le temps du non, my small publication house, to remain independent - still I am not so quite alone anymore - to think and say freely what I want, just like in love, which is priceless. After all, 60 years were needed to have Papon trialed and not be able to have Bousquet trialed, but despite all the traps set to prevent it by those we know, it still happened anyway.

As for my colleagues, what could be said? Just like in everybody's case, just like in a family, not one of the Lacanians has shown any kind of friendly solidarity[7] in that swamp-like situation I have no choice but to go through, since we are dealing with a question of ethics. One of them, who is quite famous and a landlord herself, whenever she would call to get some piece of information or a precise reference would forewarningly start with "Please do not talk to me about this, that really scares me, I would have moved a long time ago!". Well, dearest, one may want to leave, it does not mean one can. And for rather obvious reasons I do not need to develop, it will not be easy.

«She should call for the help of her rich {Jewish} friends" that star-craving creature would ejaculate.

Yet I will have to move anyway. Probably even before the expulsion deadline that is scheduled. People in that district are really too disgusting ; except for my publisher and his team.

Other colleagues, who were also Lacanians, and who learnt what was happening, and in order to get read of that disturbing matter, have created definite diagnosis about this whole thing which I would feel ashamed of reporting in the present document.

Moreover I do not hear anything from them anymore, I have left them out of my professional life as well as from my potential circle of friends.

On the other hand, I was and I am still supported by two courageous analysts, and by them alone. Still, can you be an analyst and not be brave, thus contradicting Freud? they are friends, not Jewish, and not doctors. One of them lives in Paris, and I have been sending him candidates for an analysis for a very long time, very few are those who go for a visit to him on my behalf, as the pervert candidates in particular vanish into thin air. The other one lives in Nancy, which is further away, but one should know better and go ; he makes sure that the publications of y • Le temps du non are distributed by a publishing house to be read by people.

From a practical viewpoint, and even quite recently - I have had to reject or to refuse the visit of any person of both sexes who was associated with that individual (even in his/her phantasms, but that was unfortunately not only the case).

Moreover it is perfectly comprehensible that some persons may renounce to come for a visit here or that they should feel harassed and not bear it anymore. That includes mothers who fear obscene words and sudden apparitions in front of their children.

Hence, even if slightly so, I had to give more expensive prices for my sessions, .

One should praise the courage of patients who belong to the successive generations that testify since 1896 of the nominal existence of psychoanalysis, and who continued and still continue their analysis with me under such circumstances.

If I relate all this story, I mean to insist on the fact that it belongs to the history of psychoanalysis, be it with or against the persons concerned' will. And since I refer to psychoanalysis, I should not be the one giving up in front of human bastardy, baseness, and vulgarity. Thus, since I have to move, I will ask the City Hall of Paris to have a sign placed upon this house that will read:

Here lived and worked from 1976 to 2003

« M. W. • yAnalyst, who was expulsed for the second time from a Parisian flat »

Here it starts again. In fact, it never stopped. the first time was during the war, when the French police came to fetch me, as I was still a baby, living with Jeanne and Paulo Zakin, who were hiding me in Gasnier-Guy Street, which has be disfigured since then, in the XXth district of Paris, in that building where "crips" were invented.

The janitor had denounced me, as well as a Jewish Polish mother with a baby , who were, as for them, sent to Auschwitz and never came back.

Paulo was at his job – Jeanne was Belgian and her family name was not Zakin on her identity card since Paulo and her were not married, and thus she refused to let the police enter their small apartment, and until they came back with a mandate to arrest her, she had had time to take me and flee by trains that would stop for hours in the middle of fields or in sorting railway-stations in the middle of the country-side. The journey took several days.

Further in my book, I tell the whole story as an intercession, giving the names of the various characters, of the places, of Dole, in the Jura of its surroundings and Justice Hall, Dole where I lived during the German occupation of France.

Thus, concerning the present case, since the end of 1998[8], I was very little helped by my contemporaries. It may result from the idea I have about « sublimation ». I have nothing to offer but my work, which also consists in having psychoanalysis recognised, as a discipline independent from any other, as a profession per se. the analyst should not be labelled as « doctor », « psychiatrist », « psychologist », « professor », « philosopher », « historian », psychotherapist, « therapist », « mathematician », « financial counsellor »…bearing an additional complementary qualifying « and psychoanalyst » Let the analyst be only a psychoanalyst, and nothing more, nothing else, everyone with his own style.

In the present case, which I had to bring before the public eye since it deals with ethics, the police, the judicial system, the public services, various administrations and a few politicians, and before all those I do apologise not to mention, and to start with, all the patients doing an analysis, we face a small republic taking psychoanalysis as a fact, with its own right to exist. Yet all the various branches of the medical trade refuse to recognize it, led by the psychiatrists themselves, including those who call themselves psychoanalysts, who oppose any recognition of psychoanalysis as an independent field, obstinately and childishly, thus imitating the Americans they snobbishly claim to loath[9]. All of those are quite an important lot, which is not new. Thus, thanks to them, psychoanalysis looks like the whore of psychiatry, a development which Freud feared already in Totem and Taboo, until the whore, eventually too costly, be recycled as a better investment according to Freud, as a servant. Two figures may sometimes coexist and mingle. Yet, according to Freud, some,

...parallelisms established with the symbolic of the dream, so that you may bear in mind what is specific about psychoanalysis, what characterises it, which is that its topic is Common Good, which cannot be said about psychology not psychiatry.

Introduction...*

* its topic ; i.e., according to Perrier , the unconscious.

Freud’s words are even more extreme when he writes to Paul Federn,

Freud to Paul Federn, vice-president of the psychoanalytical society of Vienna in charge of the questions concerning the practise of psychoanalysis[10].

Vienna, Berggasse 19

27.III.1926

Prof. Dr. Freud

Dear Doctor,

Thank you so much for the particular report you made concerning the debate on the issue of Laienanalyse within the Psychoanalytical Society. It still does not affect my view on that matter. I do not consider it compulsory for the members to join my point of view, but whether from a private or a public perspective, I will keep defending that view without any amendment even if I have to do it in front of a jury, and even if I remain the last one to do so. Indeed, some of you are still standing by my side. I do not mean to make a big fuss about the others’ opposing stance as long as I can avoid to do so. Should this affair take more important proportions, I would then eventually take this opportunity to give my leave and quit my present position of president of the Psychoanalytical Society, without any consequences involved for our relationship. The fight for Laienanalyse must one way or another be completely cleansed. The best for that matter is to do it without any delay. I will oppose any integration of psychoanalysis by the medical institution as long as I live. Please consider that there is no stable ground for keeping what I declare a secret in regards to the members of the Society.

Friendly Yours

Freud

I found the closest definition of Laienanalyse, i.e. an analysis made by non-doctors, in the Webster dictionary, under the entry « lay »,

One not belonging to some particular profession or not expert in some branch of knowledge or art.

One should complete that definition as following,

« …One not belonging to some particular profession or not expert in some branch of knowledge or art existing until then, which means in the present case until Freud, as he was leaving aside hypnosis in 1896, gave it the precise name of psychoanalysis. »

The analyst can thus be qualified with the term « lay », a non-expert, in all the various fields which are not psychoanalysis, while the expert of the other fields are in their turn « lay » for the analyst. Hence there may be only one psychoanalysis, which is Freud’s method, as there can only be one libido. This is the only firm basis upon which one may proceed psychologically safely and soundly to forward psychoanalysis.

The least I could say is that I have not succeeded to draw crowds of friendly people towards me. On the other hand, and I am not unveiling here any secret, I know that some of them, among whom some were quite close to me, have tried to tread upon me, in particular after Dolto’s death in August 1988, followed by Perrier’s in August 1990, as if I constituted a threat of any kind ! Jewish and non-Jewish colleagues, ex-concentration camp internees, in particular women, children of ex-internees among which there is no bond of solidarity associated with history, and others, rightists, leftists…[11] Yet the true lack of solidarity can be found in any person, as in any family. The « Lacanian community » is a sect, the structure of which, composed of cloned sub-sects, is established and functions like a religion. It is well-oiled, well partitioned, and taught in such a way that the disciples cannot think or speak about it freely. Then, indeed, such an ancestral phenomenon may be threatened by speech, by the fact that I may express what I think. Hence the expression coined by Anne-Lise Stern [12], who was not always benevolent towards me, to say the least, and who qualifies me with the terms of « Truth Bomb ».

One cannot anything against truth. The subject will not perversely, and with masochism implement self-censorship as was the custom with Stalinian type of auto-criticism or with other forms. This would lead to appear to one’s own self as somebody else, somebody else’s else, which would be a behavior leading to madness, since there the subject would be left with no representation of himself. The land of Lacania is peopled with robots just turning over — yet at least they are still alive ; no friendly circle may be built there, everybody like in a family (not all of them though) may verify it. the « Truth bomb », if I may use the expression in my turn, is made of not only what I say about what I think, but also of writing, so that it is kept in the archives of the history of psychoanalysis. This is precisely the reason yLe temps du non publishes its authors by itself, since no publisher would take their writings : what they have been saying for 35 years is not up-to-date.

Hence the following, the result of my approach, which took five years to develop.

[...]

The letter and the essay were also sent to the Home Office, as well as to the Anti-Defamation League in New York, to which I have belonged as a « paying member » for quite a long time, and I received their answer within a very short notice, and first and foremost, I had the document immediately and integrally published by the inter-media press-agency Alliance-Hosting... and finally I had it forwarded to wherever was needed …

I was asked « Why the Hague ? » and the question deserves to be asked. I had not thought about it. It is quite simple, really. I had asked a trustable person to find me the address of the Human Rights League on the web. I was given those of the Hague Court of Justice, so I turned to the Hague. Thinking it over, I estimated that it saved me alerting the specialised institutions, which tend to be more or less influenced by ideological, political or religious trends … since the Human Rights depend really and saymbolically on international law.

As mentioned I chose to proceed thus as a witness of my time, which contributes in its own way to give material to the archives of antisemitism. Secondly, I must say that I never act without  - counsel of my lawyer.

I was at Dolto’s home on the day she passed away. Her guardian angel, Colette Percheminier, was there too, obviously, since Dolto was constantly connected to two 1 meter high oxygen bottles, which means about thirty of them per 24 hours. I think I must have been the last analyst to speak with Dolto. I mentioned this small fact to the historian of French psychoanalysis (who is herself a psychoanalyst) as well as to a few other persons. It seems that what Dolto said on the last day of her life did not raise much interest. Yet the reasons for her leaving the SPP (society of psychoanalysis ) — even before Lacan — should be left aside from the history of psychoanalysis. She could not bear being labelled with the term of « communist », which showed a great lack of knowledge of both Dolto and of the ethics of psychoanalysis.

Françoise Dolto had left me a message, her last one, on my answering machine, which I interrogated long distance from my holiday site in the Côtes d'Armor. I thus called her immediately, and we agreed on a meeting. I arrived in Paris on August 25th 1988 in the morning, and I came, with the childhood symbolic present I finally thought of giving, at the age of 47, an hollowed out ocre stone, changing with the light, which I had found in the Sillon de Talbert, and which she had described as looking much like « a Persian manuscript ». On my return to Little Brittany, on the very day and at the very minute I came off, the person who had come to fetch me at the station Saint Brieuc announced me that the news that Dolto had passed away had just broke out on her way to the station. Part of the people visiting Saint Quay-Portrieux in August were waiting for me to pay their respect to Françoise Dolto. On February 21st 2002, I received a short letter from Colette Percheminier which touched me deeply, since she wrote that Françoise « even on the threshold of death, was worried about me », something I had never known.[13]

In 1979, Dolto wrote the foreword of the book we had completed on the basis of a part-time work, a book which appears in the catalogue of quite a number of libraries and which is often read and rarely quoted ; we had quite necessarily had to work part-time on it since she had to spend multiple stays in a hospital of the Paris district to keep her health steady[14].

In that foreword, she introduces me as a musician and as a psychoanalyst, and one should read those words the other way round, since even if I paid for my analysis, for my studies, and for my existence, with my work as an artist, music was only a financial support. We had been trying for several years already, and among other things, to make life bearable, if not speakable, to some autistic children and their parents.

Until 1974, Fernand Deligny would take in his institution the children we would send him for a short or a long stay, and on a more or less repeated basis. We stopped to do so in the beginning of April 1974, just when Pompidou died, as well as we stopped to go occasionally in the Cévennes, since we had estimated that the safety conditions of children who could not express themselves orally were not satisfactorily met.
I knew Deligny rather well, since I had had a written correspondence with him, which I still have kept somewhere, but I could never forget the sub-xenophobic or anti-psychoanalysis declarations he made (which in the present case is equivalent) in a letter he sent to Louis Le Guillant in 1950, which I quote here, and which he never denied to have mentioned

[...] And concerning all those who play with a veil of mystery, the quacks and the gypsies of psycho-pathology, the complexes’ spell-binders, the victors of the Unconscious, and those who read into the past to forecast the future, together with those rainbow-colored diagnosis-dealers, the congenital taints-revealers, and the sphinxes who get so many nice bank-notes a visit, all of them will be surprised that Reason should watch their parade, while it was so pleasant to exploit the good people’ credulous anxiety in her absence [...] [15]

* I translated as « rainbow-colored » what seemed to be a significant spelling mistake, « irrisés » for « irisés

I added commas, so that one should not take this style for Louis-Ferdinand Céline’s. Let us recall, as those who lived with Deligny or were close to him will confirm, that for him, Unconscious did not exist, first and foremost not through its royal way, i.e. the dream. Deligny would claim he did not dream.

[1] It is most strange to notice that landlords dare to express, directly or indirectly, and in all cases shamelessly, abuses to their tenants, as if they were stooping down to them while admitting them to pay a rent, even if a long stay of those tenats is equivalent to twice the current price of such an apartment, not to speak of the charges. One would expect in retunr a minimum of politeness from a landlord.

La nuit tombe… , yLe temps du non, Paris, fév. 1998. They were undoubtedly abréactions on the part of Jung, who was very keen of that term eventhough he had not fully grasped its meaning.

[6] If Perrier asserts that the pervert can make his object become paranoiac, the reason for it is that the pervert makes use of all means of manipulation at his disposal to keep under his control the spirit of his prey and become a persecuting obsession taking the place of freddom of thought and individual openness. Once a weakened individual breaks under this violence, the pervert has succeeded in his venture.

[7]  Among whom many « converts » to Lacanism, which was not compulsory since we do not live under the Inquisition…

[8] In fact I have not been much helped for a very long time, and professionally since the death of Dolto and then of Perrier.

[9] As a matter of fact, the doctors and the Lacanian psychiatrists in particular are not trained for analysis and have not had one themselves, so that it is most sensible to turn towards the institution of the Conseil de l'Ordre.
